Benefits - Exterior

Sophisticated Styling (return)
While the lines of the Civic form an aggressive, taut shape that appears larger than that of previous generations, the 2002 Civic is actually a bit shorter in overall length. A distinct cab-forward approach brings the interior compartment close to the front of the car, extending the greenhouse area and emphasizing a new, lower cowl area for a more refined, sporty appearance. The rear area features crisp lines and a cropped shape to further enhance the contemporary look of the car. The door panels and quarter panels have muscular contours announcing the Civic as a modern, technologically advanced vehicle. The 2001 Civic is available in two bodystyles - Coupe and Sedan. The DX, LX, Si and Si-GOP* models are available in the Coupe configuration, while the Sedan is available in the DX, DX-GOP and LX- models.

Integrated Front and Rear Combination Lights (return)
The Civic's large "free-form reflector" combination lights are both aesthetic and functional - they help distinguish the Civic from other automobiles on the road. The taillights are different for each bodystyle, being more triangular on the Coupe and square on the Sedan.

Advanced Body Structure (return)
Aided by supercomputers, enhancements to the Civic's structure are significant. Judicious use of high-tensile-strength steel in key areas (hood, frame) has brought about a dramatic increase in impact energy management for the car. Refinements to the basic body structure brought about a torsional strength increase over the previous generation. One of the more important features of the new body structure is a flat rear floor. This provides a larger passenger-cabin volume and better ergonomics for the occupants. Several major components, including the exhaust system and fuel tank, have been repositioned to take maximum advantage of this design. Corrosion protection includes sealant sprayed into crevices and joints in the body, and a special chip-resistant paint applied to lower body panels. Plastic liners are also used in the wheelwells and, along with plastic covers for the rocker panels, help minimize chipping and stone damage.

Rigid Unit-Body Construction and Energy-Absorbing Crush Zones (return)
The Civic is designed to have top safety ratings for frontal- and side-impact protection. This was a primary concern and a guiding principle of the design process. Modular engine packaging and a hydro-formed tubular front subframe contribute to enhanced management of frontal impact energy, and high-tensile-strength steel is used extensively in the body structure. This material is also used for the hood assembly. Energy-absorbing crush zones are also engineered into the Civic body. The front end is designed to help dissipate the energy of a full-frontal barrier impact at 48 km/h, and the rear end is designed to help dissipate the energy of 48 km/h rear impact. The front end is also designed to help dissipate the energy of an offset-frontal impact. Side-impact protection includes side-impact door beams, reinforced door frames and body crossmembers. (See the Safety section for more information.)

Lightweight Wheels and Full Wheel Covers (return)
Reducing wheel weight helps improve handling, ride and performance by reducing unsprung weight. All Civic DX, DX-GOP models have 14" steel wheels with full covers for an attractive appearance and a minimum of weight. Civic LX models feature 15" wheels with wheel covers. Civic Si, Si-GOP* models feature 15-inch alloy wheels, and all Civics are equipped with all-season tires.

Tinted Windows and Near-Flush-Mounted Glass (return)
Tinted windows are standard on all Civic models. The tint helps reduce glare and minimize cabin heating, which improves driver and passenger comfort. Tinted glass also helps minimize sun damage and fading of interior fabrics. Mounting the glass nearly flush with the body helps to minimize air turbulence and wind noise at highway speeds. The distance ranges from a few millimeters for the windshields to virtually flush for a fixed window, such as Coupe rear quarter-windows.

Body-Coloured Bumpers (return)
For an integrated appearance, the Civic has body-coloured bumpers, installed with a minimal gap technique that smoothes the transition between body and bumper.

Body Side Mouldings (return)
All Civic Sedans feature body side mouldings to help minimize door dings and give the body a finished, high quality appearance, Civic LX Sedan features body-coloured side mouldings.

Power Moonroof (return)
Civic Si, Si-GOP* models have a thin-section power moonroof with the tilt feature, which allows maximum headroom within the car for improved comfort. The moonroof also has a sliding sunshade that opens with the roof and can be closed to block sunlight.

Remote Fuel Filler Door Release (return)
The fuel filler door gives the Civic a clean, finished look and improves security and convenience. A Holder on the inside of the fuel filler door provides a place for the gas cap when refuelling. The door is opened with a lever next to the driver's seat.

Dual Power Mirrors (return)
Standard on Civic LX, Si and Si-GOP* models, dual power mirrors add convenience and ease of adjustability. Drivers can adjust both mirrors without enlisting the aid of the front passenger. On Sedan LX, Coupe Si, Si-GOP* models, the mirrors are body-coloured and heated. The Civic DX and DX-GOP* models have dual manual remote-operated mirrors.

Integrated Rear-Window Antenna (return)
Civic Sedan and Coupe models feature an integrated rear-window antenna in the rear window defroster system. This approach eliminates the need for a mast antenna, and is unaffected by operation of the rear window defroster. Also, unlike a mast antenna, it cannot be damaged during an automated car wash.

Windshield Washer Spray System (return)
In place of jet nozzles that deliver streams of windshield washer fluid to the windshield when cleaning, the Civic's nozzles deliver a spray pattern over the majority of the windshield. This feature helps place the washer fluid where it's needed.

Remote Entry System (return)
A remote entry system is standard on DX-GOP* and LX Sedan, Si and Si-GOP* models. Pressing the remote button marked UNLOCK once unlocks the driver's door; pressing it twice unlocks all doors. To lock all doors, it is only necessary to press LOCK once. The system has a range of up to 50 feet.

Automatic Entry Light With Dimmer (return)
The Civic features an automatic entry light with dimmer, for enhanced safety and convenience when entering and exiting the car at night. When entering the car, the interior lights are activated by unlocking the doors with either the key or the remote entry system. When exiting the car, the lights are activated by either removing the key from the ignition or unlocking the doors from the inside. Once activated, the interior lights will automatically dim and then turn off after a period of time.

Security System (return)
All Civic models equipped with power door locks are pre-wired to accept an available Honda security system.

Benefits - Engine

1.7 Litre Engine (return)
For 2002, all Civic engines have been designed, with a 1.7 litre displacement. DX, DX-GOP* and LX engines produce more horsepower and torque than in previous generations, while Si engines provide increased torque. Civic Si models feature Honda's VTEC technology for greatly reduced emissions and higher fuel economy. Employing many refinements in the interest of cleaner combustion, VTEC technology is based on Honda's VTEC variable valve-timing system, which promotes efficient, lean combustion at mid- and high-swirl intake tract designed into the cylinder head. It creates a greater swirl effect in the combustion chamber, which improves combustion-chamber turbulence, resulting in more complete combustion, better mileage and lower emissions. A sophisticated knock-control ignition system is part of the electronic control module. It continually determines the octane rating of the fuel being used and then adjusts the ignition timing for optimum performance with that fuel. On Si models, an electronically controlled exhaust gas recirculation system helps to lower nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions, and more precise fuel injection and air-fuel ratio control further clean up emissions. Many enhancements in these engines are focused on the reduction of internal friction. By applying proper surface treatments to high-friction areas, dramatic reductions were found. Honda uses a "micro-dimpling" process to create a microscopic texture on the piston skirts and top piston ring. Doing so minimizes the potential for metal-to-metal contact between the piston and cylinder wall, and also improves the oil film stability in these highly stressed locations. And VTEC engines (Si models) feature roller cam followers, which further reduce valve-train friction.

Multi-Point Programmed Fuel Injection (return)
Honda Multi-Point Programmed Fuel Injection is standard on every Civic. With this system, a fuel injector in each cylinder's intake port delivers precisely the right amount of fuel the engine needs, at precisely the right moment.

Ultra-Low-Emission Vehicle (ULEV) Technology (return)
For gasoline-fueled engines, precision fuel and spark control are at the heart of reduced emissions, augmented in the Civic by a new catalyst design and a secondary air-injection system. An electric air pump controlled by an ECM (electronic control module) feeds fresh air into the exhaust secondary air-injection system. This allows faster heating of the catalytic converter at startup.

Also facilitating lower emissions are the intake and exhaust manifolds. Equal-length intake runners serve to minimize cylinder-to-cylinder interaction, and provide sonic improvements, reducing NVH. A fabricated equal-length exhaust manifold allows the charges from each cylinder to remain discrete for a longer period of time, improving the precision of O2 sensor feedback. For 2002, all Civics are designed to meet California Ultra-Low Emission Vehicle (ULEV) standards and are available in all 50 U.S. states and Canada.

Nitrogen-Oxide-Adsorptive Catalytic Converter (return)
Lean air-fuel ratios improve fuel economy and reduce hydrocarbon, carbon monoxide and oxides of nitrogen; however, conventional 3-way catalysts are not very effective in converting NOx into normal nitrogen when excess oxygen is present. To keep NOx emissions within ULEV levels, Honda engineers added a nitrogen-oxide-adsorptive catalytic converter. The catalyst uses a proprietary mixture of platinum and other metals to attract NOx molecules to its surface (adsorption) during lean-air fuel mixture combustion. Then, when the engine is operating with a richer air-fuel ratio, the catalyst combines these NOx molecules with the hydrocarbons and CO present in the exhaust to form water vapour, carbon dioxide and nitrogen. The engine's nitrogen-oxide-adsorptive catalyst plays an important role in helping the Civic achieve ULEV emission standards.

Reduced Engine NVH (return)
Civic engines employ many refinements to reduce noise, vibration and harshness (NVH). This problem is typically prevalent under heavy acceleration, and improvements in this area are dramatic. For example, Honda engines are made quieter and smoother with a narrower timing belt, an optimized tooth profile and an automatic timing belt tensioner. Stiffer accessory brackets further reduce noise, and Civic models have liquid-filled engine mounts, again to reduce this critical vibration under acceleration. Within the engine, stiffer cylinder walls and an asymmetric piston design contribute further to reducing NVH. For models with manual transmissions, a flexible flywheel system acts to separate vibration produced by the crankshaft from the flywheel for a significant improvement in NVH.

5-Speed Manual Transmission (return)
The Civic's 5-speed manual transmission focuses on providing smooth, positive shifting. This is accomplished with advanced synchronizers and more positive gear-position detents, using a variety of strengthening treatments and refinements to get the job done.

4-Speed Automatic Transmission (return)
The Civic's available 4-speed automatic transmission with lockup torque converter features a large-capacity microprocessor and linear shift-control solenoid to reduce shift shock. The result is very smooth upshifts (even under full-throttle acceleration) and downshifts. This design also incorporates Grade Logic computer programming. Grade Logic Control eliminates "hunting" between 3rd and 4th gears when climbing hills or steep grades. In order to take advantage of engine braking, the transmission also downshifts to 3rd gear when decelerating under 48 km/h and during certain downhill driving situations. The transmission also delays upshifts during "city driving" for quicker acceleration.

Twin-Link Double Wishbone Rear Suspension System (return)
A new arrangement of rear suspension technologies has been used to give the current generation Civic refined handling and a supple ride. A twin-link version of Honda's double wishbone suspension provides the best of several design goals. The system absorbs road harshness more effectively than before, without degrading the handling precision that Hondas are known for. This rear suspension is one of the design enhancements that allows a flat floor, providing added legroom for rear-seat passengers.

Front Strut Suspension with High-Mounted Steering System (return)
To give the current generation Civic a shorter front end and enhanced ride characteristics, Honda engineers designed an entirely new front suspension system. The system uses strut-type spring/damper units that allow for the placement of the steering rack and steering rods (tie rods) high in the engine compartment. This has two advantages: It frees up more space for impact-absorbing structural members, and it allows the use of longer tie rods. The Civic's long steering system tie rods improve front-wheel toe control (the amount the tires angle toward the body), when compared to conventional MacPherson strut or double wishbone front suspensions, so the Civic tracks smoothly through corners. The front suspension's damper units (shock absorbers) are Honda's progressive valve gas-filled type, which effectively control the wheels over bumps and ruts, and also provide enhanced stability at highway speeds. The Civic's new suspension also features revised geometry, which, along with its more rigid body, increases the front tire contact with the ground, so the Civic feels stable on the road, particularly during lane-change manoeuvers.

Front and Rear Stabilizer Bars (return)
All Civic models are equipped with a front and rear stabilizer bar. This component reduces body roll for a flatter cornering stance.

Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) (return)
Civic LX Sedan and Si-GOP* models are equipped with an anti-lock braking system (ABS). The system can help the driver retain steering control during hard braking.

Power-Assisted Ventilated Disc Brakes (return)
All Civics feature power-assisted ventilated front disc brakes. Ventilated front discs dissipate heat more effectively, thereby helping to reduce brake fade during heavy braking.

Moulded, Large Fuel Tank Design (return)
The 2002 Civic features a large-capacity moulded plastic fuel tank. This type of tank allows maximum utilization of space within the confines of the car's structure. In addition, a plastic tank eliminates the possibility of rust. Constructed of several layers of tough materials, the Civic tank holds 50 litres of fuel, which is larger than the 45 litre tank found in the previous-generation Civic.

Benefits - Cargo Area

Bumper-Level Trunk Opening (return)
To help make loading and unloading of cargo easier, the trunk opening on every Civic extends to the bumper.

Cargo and Storage Options (return)
Numerous storage areas are conveniently located throughout the Civic's interior, including an audio storage compartment, two beverage holders in the center console and a glove compartment located directly in front of the passenger seat.

Rear Window Defroster with Timer (return)
A rear window defroster with a timer circuit is standard equipment on the Civic. The timer circuit shuts the defroster off after a predetermined amount of time, conserving electrical energy and helping to prevent damage to the defroster elements from overheating.

Lined and Carpeted Trunk Area (return)
In keeping with the precision assembly of exterior panels for the Civic, the trunk area is fully lined and carpeted. At this level, the Civic is trimmed in a manner comparable to the Accord models.

Cargo Area Light (return)
For added convenience, a cargo area light is provided on all Civic models. The light is actuated when the trunk panel is opened, and provides illumination for the entire trunk area.

Split Fold-Down Rear Seatback (return)
All Civic models feature a 60/40 split rear seatback with a lock for added security. This handy feature allows trunk access from within the interior cabin, and clearance for objects too large to fit entirely in the trunk.

Trunk Cargo Net (return)
A cargo net is standard on the Si and Si-GOP* Coupes and available on all other models. Cargo net hooks are provided in the trunk, along with a convenient hook for hanging small items such as a gym bag.

Benefits - Interior

Ergonomically Designed Instruments and Controls (return)
The Civic's interior is intended to function as a comfortable, solid and quiet environment for driver and passengers. The Civic features well-marked and logical instrumentation, unencumbered entry and exit, and an array of practical refinements. The seating and control layout in the Civic reflect its sporty, youthful nature. The bucket seats with open-type head restraints (Coupes) are highly supportive to help minimize fatigue during long periods of driving. The instrument panel features four primary gauges, each displayed in separate, round clusters. A dual-mode LCD trip odometer is an integral part of the display. In addition, fuel usage data is calculated electronically as a function of the Civic's ECU, or computer. This provides a much more accurate readout than available from traditional fuel gauges. Civic Coupe models feature silver instrument faces with amber illumination, Sedan LX with white illumination while all other Sedan models retain black instrument faces with white illumination. Controls and switches are all within easy reach of the driver. They include those for mirrors on the left side of the instrument panel, and the heating, ventilation and available air-conditioning system (HVAC) to the left of the audio-system panel. Audio controls are contained in a central vertical panel well clear of the shifter and center console.

Dual-Stage Driver's and Front Passenger's Airbags (SRS) (return)
Dual-stage driver's and front passenger's airbags (SRS) are standard on all Civics. In the event of a moderate-to-severe frontal impact, the airbags inflate and deflate in a fraction of a second, and are designed to help prevent serious head and upper body injuries. The new dual-stage inflators for the front airbags are designed to inflate at one of two rates, depending on crash severity and occupant seat belt use. It's important to note that airbags are a supplemental occupant-protection system, designed to be used in conjunction with the 3-point seat belts to provide additional safety for the driver and front passenger.

Immobilizer Theft-Deterrent System (return)
An Immobilizer Theft-Deterrent System is standard on all Civics. The ignition key has a built-in transponder, which when removed immobilizes the engine fuel injection and ignition so the engine cannot be started. When the key is inserted, a radio signal from the ECU (Electronic Control Unit) is sent to the transponder. If the code in the key and the code in the ECU agree, then the ECU allows the engine to start. The key needs no batteries, as it receives what little energy it needs through the ignition/steering-lock unit that functions as a transmitter and receiver antenna. An indicator lamp on the instrument panel lets the driver know that the Immobilizer system has accepted the key.

Adjustable Steering Column (return)
A height-adjustable steering column is standard on all Civic models. The range of adjustment is such that a greater range of driver sizes can be comfortably accommodated.

Cruise Control (return)
Cruise control is standard on Civic LX, Si, Si-GOP* models. Cruise control helps ease driver fatigue on long trips. The SET and RESUME control buttons are conveniently located on the steering wheel. The ON/OFF switch is on the left side of the instrument panel.

AM/FM Stereo with Clock (return)
DX models feature a standard 4 x 20-watt AM/FM stereo with 4 speakers and clock. DX-GOP, LX, Si and Si-GOP* models feature a higher-powered 4 x 30-watt CD system (with 6 speakers on LX Coupe and Si Coupe models) for added audio quality. Six-speaker systems feature tweeters mounted in the base of each outside mirror for better high-frequency sound dispersion. A 1-DIN-sized opening directly beneath the stereo will accept an accessory audio component or three CD "jewel" cases.

Air Conditioning and Heating System (return)
Air conditioning with electronic controls is standard on Civic DX-GOP, LX and Si-GOP* models, and available on all other models. The system uses an environmentally friendlier non-CFC refrigerant and has a greater cooling capacity than the previous-generation Civic. With a laminated-fin evaporator and large-capacity condenser unit, the heating ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) system is quiet, efficient and easy to use. The system also has excellent air-conditioning cool-down time and cabin air distribution. Heater performance benefits from a large-capacity aluminum heater core. The core uses thinner tubing and offers less resistance to airflow, so heat transfer is more efficient. Airflow into the heater unit is controlled by an electric-motor-driven door, rather than the cable-actuated control used on previous-generation Civics. The system is controlled by the ECU and features large knobs and buttons. The controls are close to the driver for easier actuation.

Micron Air-Filtration System (return)
This system is capable of trapping particulate matter from 8.0 microns (the size of most pollen) down to as small as 0.3 microns (diesel emissions). Micron air-filtration not only helps to filter out allergens, it also keeps the interior cleaner by preventing the entry of most dust particles through the ventilation system. Replacement periods for the filter unit should average about two years, 48,000 kilometers in normal use.

Power Windows (return)
Civic LX, Si and Si-GOP* models feature power windows with an auto-down driver's window. Individual controls are located adjacent to their respective windows, and the driver's window control illuminates. As an added safety measure, all passenger windows can be deactivated by pressing a master switch on the driver's power window control panel.

Power Door Locks (return)
Power door locks are standard on Civic DX-GOP*, LX, Si and Si-GOP models. They offer the driver and front passenger security and convenience.

Dual Vanity Mirrors (return)
The added convenience of dual vanity mirrors is standard on all Civic models.

Map Lights (return)
All Civic LX, Si and Si-GOP* models feature standard map lights. They provide reading light at night without distracting the driver.

Ignition Switch Light (return)
Civic Si, Si-GOP* models have a small light to illuminate the ignition switch, making it easier to insert the key at night. The light is activated when the driver's door is opened, and remains lit for 10 seconds.

Beverage Holders and Coin Box (return)
Front beverage holders are standard on all Civic models. Located between the driver and front passenger, the front holder will hold two cans or cups securely. A coin box located on the left side of the instrument panel can be used to keep loose change for tolls and parking meters readily at hand.

Seats and Adjustable Head Restraints (return)
The front and rear seats of the Civic have high-quality fabrics and offer plenty of comfort, thanks to broad backrests and front-seat adjustable head restraints. Driver's seats on LX Sedans and Si, Si-GOP* models are equipped with manual seat height adjusters. Coupe models feature sporty, adjustable open-type front seat head restraints.

Seat Belt Automatic Tensioning System (return)
The front 3-point seat belts on the Civic are equipped with an automatic tensioning system (also known as pretensioners). In the event of a moderate-to-severe impact, this system instantly tightens the shoulder and lap belts to help hold the driver and front passenger in place. A dedicated computer triggers both the automatic tensioning system and airbags simultaneously.

Adjustable Front Seat Belt Anchors (return)
The upper anchors on the front seat belts in Civic Sedans can be adjusted up or down to better fit the driver and passenger.

3-Point Seat Belts at All Seating Positions (return)
3-point seat belts are installed at all seating positions, and Coupe models have a slide rail for the lower belt loop to clear the door opening when either door is opened. This can make access to the rear seat significantly easier.

Child Safety Features (return)
All Civics are equipped with child-seat tether anchors, located on the rear parcel shelf. All Civic models feature a child seat mounting system called LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children) in the outboard rear seats. The LATCH system utilizes the upper child-seat tether anchors and new lower anchors. When used with a compatible child seat, the LATCH system provides attachment points between the child seat and vehicle seat. This helps ensure correct mounting of the child seat. All passenger 3-point seat belts feature lockable retractors that can secure child seats without special locking clips. All Civic Sedans feature child-proof rear door locks. When engaged, they permit the rear doors to be opened only from the outside, thereby preventing accidental opening by a child.

Passenger-Assist Grips and Grab Handles (return)
All Civic models are equipped with retractable passenger-assist grips. They help make it easier to enter and exit the vehicle - one of many Civic comfort and convenience features that contribute to the overall ownership experience in small but important ways. Civic Coupe models also provide rear-seat grab handles for added passenger security.

Remote Fuel Filler Door Release (return)
The fuel filler door can be opened from the driver's seat for quick and easy access to the fuel cap. At a full-service pump, it offers the convenience and security of remaining in the car. In addition, it helps prevent tampering with the fuel system.

Sculpted Fabric Door Linings and Map Pockets (return)
The inner door panels are fitted with high-quality fabrics and moulded armrests. Depending on the audio configuration for the car, the door panels may also integrate the front speakers - the larger woofers are contained in the lower front area of the panel. Large map pockets are also integral to the inner door panels, and are conveniently located beneath the armrests on the front doors.

Fold-Down Armrest and Storage Areas (return)
An upholstered, seat-mounted folding driver's armrest is standard on LX, Si and Si-GOP* models. The armrest can be especially beneficial on long trips. In addition, a storage unit is located between the front seats. The floor-mounted storage compartment ensures that smaller items - such as cassette tapes and sunglasses - are always within the driver's reach. All Civics also have in-dash storage to accommodate three CD "jewel" cases. Civic LX and Si models feature a cover for this bin.

Passenger Seat Walk-in Feature (return)
Civic Coupes have a lever-operated passenger-seat walk-in feature to help make rear seat entry and exit easier. When the lever is pressed, the front passenger's seatback moves to its farthest forward position, while the seat slides up to the forward end of its tracks.

Rear Seat Heater Ducts (return)
To enhance comfort in cold weather, Civic Sedans have rear seat heater ducts, which direct warm air into the rear seating area. This speeds even temperature distribution throughout the passenger cabin.
